DOGS in a greyhound race in country Victoria last night were left with an unenviable choice: chase the mechanical lure or get after the real hare. The first race at Shepparton greyhounds was scrapped when one of the runners chased a hare which found its way on to the track. Outsider Ginny Lou, which was in third place, set off after the hare and after reviewing the official race film stewards declared the event a “no race”. The 000 wagered on the race went back to the punters. “Every time Ginny Lou sees a ball or something moving in the wind her ears prick up,” said the dog’s trainer, Scott Stefanos. “So when she saw the hare, her eyes she chased it away and then ran back on to the track to finish the race. “She was coming third before she saw it, but her little detour meant she ran last, not that it mattered in the end as it was called a ‘no race’. “She’s pulled up really well and is as happy as Larry, wagging her tail this morning.”
